An “off-the-cuff” design developed during a one-weekend competition in the hilly countryside of southern France for a villa with an artist’s studio and a separate guest apartment resulted in this elongated building complex. A high, all-encompassing roof on elegant stilts ties together the various elements: the main entrance, villa, studio, guest apartment, terrace, and swimming pool. The requirement for a separate guest house was used to elegantly integrate the main access from the street, the passage to the terrace and garden, and the circulation to the villa and guest apartment. The studio is located at the quiet end and makes full use of the roof height. The elongated layout of the building complex, which follows the ridge of the hill, highlights the exceptionally beautiful location with its views.
