For the year 2024, the city of Helsinki announced an architectural competition for a project with a very ambitious goal: the revitalisation and upgrading of the historic harbour area. The architectural programme is that of a museum of architecture and design. The proposal consists of a translucent structure at street level, designed to create a clear link between the outside and the inside. The upper part consists of a huge continuous band of Corten steel, reminiscent of old ship hulls. This creates an architectural ‘promenade’ that connects a nearby park with the outermost point of the terrace and creates a physical dialogue between the natural and the artificial.
