The idea of building a new theatre next to Cologne’s historic Staatenhaus, a neoclassical building from the early 20th century, has been around for several years. The final proposal consists of a design that avoids the idea of a mirror image of the monument in order to be a reinterpretation based on universal architectural principles. Inside, the relationship between spaces and volumes attempts to counterbalance the symmetry that the programme inevitably requires.
