Competition

As a public space, the project site aims to activate the last undeveloped stretch of the Spree riverbank in central Berlin and integrate the requirements of the Bundestag administration, the Ver.di headquarters, and the planned residential development. The design draws upon the guiding concept of the “Band des Bundes” (Federal Ribbon), evolving it by extending the existing built structure and establishing an urban layout aligned with the Reichstag’s north-south axis and historical property boundaries. Three plazas along the Spree form a continuous public open space, while the new Luisenblock Ost II, the residential buildings, and the relocated Ver.di site create a functionally mixed district featuring publicly accessible ground-floor zones. An access concept prioritizing destination traffic, cycling, and walking reduces through-traffic and enhances the quality of the district as a place to spend time.
